re: EHRs: Waste Of Money Or Wise Investment?
I agree with one point made: each vendor EHR/EMR is different, and there is no impetus, requirement, or standards for interoperability.

So never mind about 20 years off in the future, what if your doctor retires next year, and the new Doc uses a different EHR? your records likely are not going to be usable in Doc #2's practice.

Another issue is the fragmentation of the Healthcare profession. Each specialty has their own little niche, jargon and method of recording patient data. The way I look at a typical hospital, it is a "Data Silo Farm".

I find it a bit perplexing that these academics are so quick to make a judgement call on savings health IT can provide. Many EHR systems are only recently being adopted and I don't believe we've become to truly realize the savings. To me it's fairly obvious that EHRs are the future of chronic disease management and reduction in admission rates which are the most expensive cost of healthcare. One only has to look like at a company like Kaiser who is invested in both the delivery of care & the payer and has invested a substantial amount of money in health IT so see the savings.
