I think this is a good option to explore, as supplementary information is always good, but like Jay, I am also skeptical. Using social media may open the the door to hoaxes and false alarms. There will need to be a way to determine the legitimacy and credibility of a request coming from a social platform before emergency services personnel waste their time and resources.

re: London Firefighters Pursue Twitter Monitoring
I'm a little skeptical of the use of Twitter or 3rd party services to do something so important as report fires, ask for help, etc. The article states it's not meant to replace dialing the emergency number (999 in this case), but as a supplement. I feel this may pick up as a way to report non-emergency things such as minor accidents, but won't be very effective in emergency situations. If you need immediate help, using voice will always be a better option. If you have data signal on your phone, you should have voice capabilities.
