re: 11 Amazing Apps Of 2012
What do you use iTunes for? Do you have Windows, OS X, or Linux around? The libidevice packages work very cleanly on all 3 platforms and ifuse works well on both OS X and Linux. I've seen others such as i-FunBox and iExplorer work great, but I obviously prefer the command-line tools.

I have used iTunes for several years and I downloaded iTunes 11.0.0.163 two weeks ago. It was the biggest pain in the #$% that I've encountered in the my years of using iTunes. If there was a reasonable alternative, I would be there.
