re: VMware: Software-Defined Networking Without 'Rip And Replace'
While VMware's initiative to conquer and commoditize the network space is all to the good in the current market, I too am suspicious of using the word "simplicity" in the context of implementing new data, control and management planes on legacy equipment.

"NSX will be a great platform for Cisco customers," & VMware continues working closely with Cisco, says CEO Pat Gelsinger.

The overlay concept sounds so easy and simple that it makes me suspicious. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens once NSX gets deployed in enterprise data centers and we start to find out where the problems are. That said, VMware's push into the network is spurring a lot of competitive activity and development--I'm hopeful this will result in useful changes for network engineers.

re: VMware: Software-Defined Networking Without 'Rip And Replace'
A new layer of software that overlies existing network hardware (from various vendors, not all of them the three-letter one that owns VMware) with all-new data, control and management planes? What could possibly go wrong?
