Company culture is as important as proximity, a point sometimes forgotten. If heirarchy is minimized and peer to peer communication maximized, collaboration occurs between interested co-workers, regardless of where they are located.

Do you see this as the root of the trend started at Yahoo to limit telecommuting and require workers to be physically in an office at least much of the time? And if so, do you think that constant physical proximity necessarily improves collaboration?

The report cited above found that organizations with an ESC initiative were almost 4-times as likely as those without an official initiative to provide staff
training / workshops focused on effective team collaboration (41% vs. 14%)...

As organizations continue to squeeze out middle management, the need for virtual collaboration naturally rises in importance. The question remains, are organizations doing enough to really train those left to do the work to learn how to use and leverage these tools?

Good post. I am not surprised to see that a well planned and strategically deployed enterprise social collaboration leads to significant business results.
