IT Dreams for 2006
* Sony got a clue, consumers got reimbursed, and the company's supplier of choice for DRI found another calling? And what if a summit was held on intellectual property rights in the digital age, and no one was allowed to leave the room until some initial agreements were reached? * If, instead of hackers auctioning off ill-gotten gains on eBay, companies could use Ebay to bid on making convicted hackers do the most boring maintenance work in their app-dev portfolios. * And on a related theme, what if all these people busily deploying their technical skills to wreck havoc just for fun, could see the value in channeling all that knowledge and creativity into truly useful and cutting-edge developments? * Oracle spends more time assimilating it's hard-won booty, er companies, and less time adding to the pile. * If someone besides the judge got serious about settling the RIM/NTP patent suit and in the meantime, if RIM spelled out to legions of addicted, anxious and entitled users the details of its Plan A AND Plan B - the so-far secret workaround. * If our government agencies, starting with Homeland Security, got their security acts together, and managed to get at least a passing grade, if not better, on their next IT report card? * If the zealots who haunt the message boards could remind themselves each day upon waking that whatever the focus of their obsession, it's only a technology, and not a religion? * If all cell phones used the same recharger connection, cell phone etiquette became all the rage, and the decision to allow cell calls in flight was rescinded? * If application error messages told end users something useful. * If consumers wised up, and stopped responding to requests for information from companies they don't do business with, and the companies that collect our data are held legally responsible for protecting it. * If "Opt In" becomes the rule of thumb, and it was decreed that all privacy statements must be boiled down to no more than two screens, and be written in English, not legalese. * If an organized and concerted effort was made to recycle the gazillions of electronic parts, devices, gadgets, computers and related peripherals we toss annually. And in particular, if everyone would donate their old cell phones to the various organizations that can use them, for example women's shelters and soldiers overseas. Offering a credit toward the purchase of a new phone in exchange for donating the old one might be one way to encourage it. * If we could bring the pride and the excitement back to working in IT, and also find a way to recycle or repackage the skills of thousands of underemployed or unemployed IT workers. Failing all that, may your server always be up, your applications never freeze, and your data always be restored. P.S. We'd love to hear what you think would be nice to see happen in 2006 - we can always dream! « Golly, Was I Too Cynical? | Main | Daily News Podcast, Tuesday, Dec. 13 » |
