Wireless Wrap From This Year's Interop

Posted by Stephen Wellman, May 24, 2007 04:49 PM

Wireless and mobility were big topics at this year's Interop. Let's take a look at the wireless news in review.

> The show opened with mobility announcements from Avaya, Citrix Systems, Nortel, and Aruba. It looks like mobility is shaping up as the focal point for unified communications for many vendors.

> Thanks to all the hype surrounding wireless LAN startup Aerohive (including their Best of Interop award) the old fat Acess Point vs. Thin Access point came back to the Wi-Fi market. After nearly six years of enterprise WLAN deployments, it's amazing that there is still no real standard for Wi-Fi network management and optimization. I have to admit, the Wi-Fi discussions at this year's Interop were all very retro 2002.

> Cisco Systems and Nokia talked a lot about convergence. The two companies were hyping their new converged communications solution, "Nokia Intellisync Call Connect for Cisco," a product that promises to connect enterprise telephony with Nokia smartphones.

> Nokia may have finally cracked the U.S. carrier market in terms of dual-mode access. The company promised that Wi-Fi ready Eseries smartphones would soon hit the U.S. market. That's what we expected from the E61, but it didn't pan out last fall. We'll have to wait and see.

All in all, it was a great show. Thanks to entire the Interop staff for a great week.
