And Now, In Other Cell Phone News

Posted by Marin Perez, Jul 11, 2008 07:02 PM

All the iPhone 3G madness has garnered much of the attention today with the release, and subsequent activation nightmare. But there was other smartphone news today, including some announcements from Palm, and new pictures of a BlackBerry device.

Palm's been on life support for the last few years, and the Centro has been keeping the doctors from pulling the plug. This entry-level smartphone is expected to ship 2 million units before the end of the year and part of that is due to its low price point.

It looks like it's going to get cheaper, too, as AT&T is chopping an extra $30 off the price. You can now grab one for $70 with a two-year contract. I'd advise not trying to get it at an AT&T store today though, as you'll be dealing with lines, and stressed out salespersons.

Customers wanting a more powerful Palm device are in luck because the company's Treo 800w is available and being shipped to customers. According to a tipster on Treocentral.com:

I just ordered mine (Thursday, July 10th, 7 p.m.). Not only did I get the $249 price, but when I casually mentioned that I was considering getting the iPhone instead, they also threw in a $50 credit to my account to match the price of the iPhone and waived the $18 activation fee. So I just bought the new 800W for $181. Sweet indeed!

I'm still a bit perplexed as to why this person's so happy about the latest Treo, but I bet he was at least able to activate it.

As for RIM, the spies at BerryReview have some exclusive shots of the upcoming BlackBerry Javelin. It looks very sleek and chic, and it should fit nicely in your hand. Unfortunately, this phone will only have EDGE-network speeds, but it does have integrated Wi-Fi.
