President Barack Obama Has Been Googlebombed

Posted by Eric Zeman, Jan 23, 2009 09:59 AM

We all know the story of the Googlebomb, right? Googlebombs are created by manipulating links and search rankings to produce a specific result for a certain search term. Perhaps the most famous is the one that targeted former President George W. Bush. When you Googled "miserable failure" the results pointed to him. A new Googlebomb has been created for President Obama.

According to Google Blogoscoped, the new Googlebomb isn't so mean as the one that targeted Bush. If you do a search for the term "cheerful achievement", you'll be pointed to President Barack Obama. Of course, now that the story has come out, Google's search bots have discovered the Googlebomb. You'll still see the result, but it won't necessarily be the first result.

That may be a nice Googlebomb, but Obama has also been Yahoobombed, with less friendly results.

Search Engineland reports that, "Do a search on Yahoo right now for miserable failure, and you’ll find President Barack Obama’s page ranking either in the top spot or the second spot. Given a redirect that Obama’s web team has put into place, he should solidify into that number one spot over time. Eventually, Microsoft’s Live Search should reflect that, as well. And over at Google, Obama will likely gain a top page listing for a search on failure."

I've performed the search multiple times through various different search engines. Search Engineland is right. A Yahoo search for "miserable failure" surely points to Obama. Performing the same search on Google right now leads to a bunch of results about Bush, Obama and Googlebombs. That search performed via Microsoft's Live Search still points to Bush at the moment, as well as articles abnout Googlebombs.
