Covisint Hands Huge Contract To Documentum

Documentum Inc. has won a multimillion-dollar document- and content-management contract with the auto exchange Covisint. Documentum's multilingual 4i eBusiness Platform, which incorporates central storage, security, and version control for electronic documents, will be used to create what a Documentum spokesman calls a modern assembly line for high-volume content.

Documentum VP Whitney Tidmarsh says the software, which recently went live after a two-month pilot, lets automakers and suppliers create, deliver, publish, and personalize content in a wide range of formats, including XML, and manage catalog content. Exact terms of the contract weren't disclosed.

Document-management software is particularly important in the automotive industry, where design and trading partners must all work from the most current specifications, but also need to review earlier specifications in order to ensure that their designs meet original specs. The design of an automobile can involve tens of thousands of documents, many of which will be modified in real time by Covisint users. "Do the math and you find that managing content becomes unmanageable without an advanced automated system that can handle a large volume of real-time document requests and keep track of all modifications from generation to generation," Tidmarsh says.

Mark Baughman, a member of the Covisint construct team, says the 4i eBusiness Platform provides an easy-to-use, technically advanced content-management platform. The software lets Covisint segregate one user's information from others, providing a secure environment for private transactions conducted on the huge automotive exchange. The Documentum software also lets Covisint users create and manage workflows that govern how documents are accessed and modified. Documentum recognizes more than 100 electronic document formats, including computer-aided drawing formats, and integrates to Covisint's enterprise resource planning system, Oracle's 11i E-business Suite, without the need for software connectors.
