Enterasys Networks Inc. on Wednesday will launch two routers for branch and regional offices, designed to give smaller companies and branch offices a full range of security features and wide-area networking options in a single device.

The vendor's X-Pedition Security Routers include the XSR-1805 desktop model with an external power supply and the rack-mounted XSR-1850 model with an internal power supply and optional redundant power supply.

In addition to IP routing, the routers offer virtual private network (VPN) services, firewalls, encryption, and remote-management capabilities, as well as a range of wide-area interfaces, including fractional and channelized T1, basic-rate and primary-rate ISDN, and a high-speed serial port.

Enterasys will expand the X-Pedition Security Router family early next year with models for regional offices. At that time the company also will add new features to the entire XRS family, including additional wide-area interfaces, support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), which is the next-generation standard for IP, intrusion detection, IP multicasting, and "user personalized networking". That feature customizes the network and IT resources available to individuals based on their roles within an organization.

LAN connections on both models are dual 10/100 Ethernet ports. Both models are available now. List prices are $1,500 for the XSR-1805, not including an optional $995 VPN module, and $3,400 for the XSR-1850, which includes VPN capabilities.
