Good Technology Acquires AppCentral
Good, known for a sandboxed environment and apps custom-written to it, will also offer the main alternative approach to Mobile Application Management security and MDM, 'wrapping' the app in a secure, managed shell.
Good Technology, a leading mobile security vendor, today announced that they have agreed to acquire AppCentral, a provider of app storefront and management software.
AppCentral has app 'wrapping' technology which allows administrators to distribute apps confined in a secure shell which limits the app's capabilities and increases the ability to manage the app.
Wrapping is a technique used by many vendors in the emerging Mobile Application Management (MAM) market. MAM is the next generation beyond Mobile Device Management (MDM), a technique with scores of vendors which focuses on management of the device. MAM seeks to manage the applications on the device.
Good has historically taken a different approach to mobile security, running a sandboxed, highly-secure and manageable environment with special apps written to their API. Buying AppCentral would seem to be a matter of covering both bases.
Financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.
