Not much is known about the next version of Android. Android 2.2 -- or Froyo -- is being worked on, but Google hasn't indicated much more than that. Recently, a number of web sites have spotted evidence that the next version of Android is being tested on the web.A handful of blogs have spotted the telltale markers of Android 2.2 in their server logs. It's a strong indication that the newest operating system from Google has been installed on at least a few handsets and is being tested on the mobile web.

What can we say about Froyo? Well, Google used to spell out what was in store for each Android update, but has stopped providing that information. What we do know is that Android 2.2 will focus more on enhancing the overall performance of the system rather than introduce more features.

One possible bit of code we'll see in Android 2.2 comes from the JIT Compiler for Android's Dalvik VM. Reports have indicated that by implementing that code into Android, it streamlines the behavior of the operating system and provides up to a 250% increase in performance.

Other system upgrades include Flash Player 10.1 (which we know is on the way soon), freed up RAM for use by customers, and OpenGL ES 2.0 to boost graphics performance.

When will we learn more? Well, Google's I/O conference is scheduled for May 19. It's quite likely that Google will take the opportunity to share information about Froyo at that event.
