I think in the long term the server, storage, network, database, etc administration jobs will be automated, but in the short term it looks like the situation is going in the opposite direction. There are all kinds of CIOs that are so "cost on the PO" driven that they are moving to x86 and massively scaled-out technology. You can buy an x86 server and some disk for nothing, but it requires an army of administrators to keep all that gear up and integrate components from 28 different vendors. As x86 becomes more prevalent, there will be an increasing need for people to integrate, update, patch, etc. Unless, of course, the "cloud" takes over, but that has its own issues.
