Bank of America is installing more than 200 Cisco TelePresence units across the globe in what Cisco said will be its largest TelePresence installation. The large-scale program will be used only for internal collaboration with no plans for customer-facing applications as yet. From a Cisco press release:

Bank of America Chief Technology Officer Marc Gordon said deploying Cisco TelePresence will provide the bank with significant, sustainable benefits.

"This global Cisco TelePresence deployment will help our associates collaborate and integrate even more effectively as we deliver all of our capabilities to customers and clients worldwide," he said. "This is an example of our commitment to use innovative technology to address real business opportunities.

"The technology also will help associates better manage work-life balance by providing flexible meeting options, and in some cases reducing the need to travel."

The new pact calls for a 7-fold increase in the number TelePresence systems at use within Bank of America, from 28 up to the 200 that will be installed by the end of the year.

In the press release announcing the deal, Bank of America said it expects to gain these and other benefits from the expanded rollout and availability of the TelePresence systems, which in recent months have become a red-hot product for Cisco and its customers: self-service scheduling is all done online; collabortion apps are "plug-and-play"; one meeting can include participants from up to 48 locations; and users can record and share the high-quality video the systems employ.

Also, Bank of America said its expanded deal with Cisco includes a managed-services contract calling for Cisco to be responsible for the following:

1) Simplified adoption and management: The managed service approach allows the bank to deploy TelePresence quickly and under a unique arrangement, obtain full service from Cisco. Cisco will install, support, refresh and maintain the TelePresence equipment. Cisco also will provide active monitoring, technical support and concierge service.

2) Use of existing facilities: Bank of America can take advantage of its own facilities and core data network.

3) Intercompany collaboration: Cisco will work with its certified channel and service-providers to enable Bank of America associates to use Cisco TelePresence to meet with external partners who also have TelePresence technology.
