First, everyone was presuming that the device would be called the iPad 3, but Apple is not using that name. At the event and in the press materials it is just "the new iPad." Apple might be adopting the iPod-naming convention, as in "iPad (third generation)".
Rumor 1) The iPad 3 will have a retina display.
Jay and everyone else got this right. The display does look really impressive and the specs certainly are.
Rumor 2) The iPad 3 will support 4G LTE.
Yes, this also turned out to be true, although there are some caveats. Verizon and AT&T will have new iPads, as will providers in other countries, but neither T-Mobile nor Sprint were mentioned.
Rumor 3) The iPad 3's camera will have a higher resolution.
3 for 3. The new iPad has a 5MP camera and can take 1080p video.
Rumor 4) The iPad 3 will be about the same size as the iPad 2, maybe a little thicker.
Another hit. Even the sub-1mm number was right. It's basically a hair bigger and heavier. Not a problem unless you thought it was too big or too heavy.
Rumor 5) The iPad 3 will have an A5X processor.
We said it was "likely true" that there would be an A5X and there is, but we said it would be a dual-core processor. In fact, it is a quad core. We sold the new iPad short here.
Correction: Editor/author of this piece in error: Jacob was right that the A5X is a dual-core processor. I was confused by the fact that the integrated graphics processor is quad-core. To cite the new iPad Technical Specifications:Dual-core Apple A5X custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip with quad-core graphics
Rumor 6) The iPad 3 will have Siri.
Whiff! Siri, as such, was not mentioned. The new iPad has dictation which comes from Siri, but I don't give a lot of credit on this.
We did hedge on this prediction, saying that was "[m]ore than likely yes, but I wouldn't put all my money on it." Sounds a little weaselly today.
Rumor 7) Apple will introduce an iPad Mini.
We called shenanigans on this one and we were right. I do not get to smack Jay across the face with an iPad Mini or any other sort of device--yet.
Rumor 8) The iPad 3 will get an $80 price hike.
Right on this one. We said Apple would not get greedy, even if the cost of materials on the display were higher, and the prices are in fact the same. And the iPad 2 remains on sale, now at a discounted price.
Summing it up, I give Jay six right, one partly right, and one dead wrong, although he did have his fingers crossed on that last one. I'm giving him a score of 90, or A-.
Jay is 7 for 8 and semi-wrong on the 8th. I'll call that a 95 and an A (still short of an A+).
