T-Mobile recently shared some statistics from the Android Market. Right now, there are about 2,300 applications available, which is under one-tenth the size of the iPhone Apps Store's whopping 25,000+.The Android Market is Google's answer to Apple's iPhone Apps Store. It offers users of Google's Android mobile operating system a place to search for and download applications for their phones.
The Android Market launched about four months after Apple's store did, and hasn't grown quite as rapidly. At launch, Apple had about 500 apps in its store. The Android Market had closer to 50. Since then, Apple has swelled the number of applications up to a staggering 25,000, while the Android Market has grown to a more meager 2,300. Not that 2,300 applications all wrapped up in once place is anything to sneeze at. Of the 2,300, about one-third, or 766 apps, are for-pay. That means developers have been busy since the Android Market started accepting paid apps in the last month or so.
The Apple apps store is a bit more refined and easier to search. The Android market isn't as polished, nor as user friendly. Discovery can still be a little bit of a problem, and T-Mobile agrees. T-Mobile's CTO, Cole Brodman, said that the Market needs "more intuitive filtering options" to make discovery easier.
Even so, it appears that the Android Market is healthy and growing. It will be interesting to see how all the mobile apps stores stack up once those from RIM, Microsoft and Palm launch later this year.
