Qualcomm, Microsoft Partnership Produces Lower-Cost Smartphones
The phones, aimed at the consumer market, integrate support for Windows Mobile in Qualcomm's MSM chipsets.
Qualcomm on Tuesday announced worldwide availability of several new Windows Mobile-based smartphones resulting from the chipmaker's partnership with Microsoft.
The smartphones, which come from manufacturers such as HTC, LG Electronics, and Samsung, offer advanced functionality without a separate applications processor. This is possible through integrated support for the Windows Mobile platform in Qualcomm's chipsets.
"We are very excited to see the next-generation smartphones now become available around the world, and with the comprehensive set of business and entertainment applications users want," said Steve Mollenkopf, senior VP of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. CDMA is short for code division multiple access, a digital cellular phone technology developed by Qualcomm.
Qualcomm has provided integrated support for Windows Mobile in its Mobile Station Modem MSM7xxx-series dual-core chipsets. Additionally, the chipsets contain hardware-accelerated multimedia capabilities, connectivity features, and mobile broadband support.
Microsoft and Qualcomm's partnership first became public in 2006 and has since expanded to include joint development work on the MSM7225 chipset for HSDPA, short for high-speed downlink packet access, a next-generation cellular technology used by GSM carriers like AT&T, and the MSM7525 chipset for 1xEV-DO Rev. A, a next-generation cellular technology used by CDMA carriers like Verizon and Sprint.
The chipsets are intended for the consumer market where there is a need for lower-cost smartphones with mobile broadband capabilities, according to Qualcomm. Currently, such smartphones are prevalent in the business market, ranging from $200 and higher.
There are more than 20 smartphones being designed that use Qualcomm's MSM chipsets and the Windows Mobile platform for different business and entertainment applications, including Microsoft Office Mobile and Windows Live, as well as other third-party applications.
