TransMedia Makes Word Processor And More Storage Available Through Apple iPhone
TransMedia has added iPhone support to its Glide Mobile online media sharing and storage service.
Apple's iPhone just got an unauthorized upgrade.
TransMedia, a New York-based startup, on Monday said that it had added iPhone support to its Glide Mobile online media sharing and storage service.
By allowing Glide subscribers to stream their online music collections to the iPhone, TransMedia has effectively augmented the iPhone's onboard 4-Gbyte or 8-Gbyte capacity with Web-based storage.
TransMedia has also made its online word processor accessible to iPhone users, beating Google and other companies offering online word processors to the punch.
"You can type, save, and export to Word on iPhone right now," said CEO Donald Leka. Documents can also be saved as PDF or RTF files.
Leka contrasts Apple's arrangement with Google as a preferred partner with his own company's "guerrilla" approach.
"I think it's fair to say that as Google CEO Eric Schmidt has indicated that Google and Apple will be making some kind of announcement in the near future regarding Web apps on the iPhone," said Leka. "From our vantage point, the best thing for consumers is to have the widest available selection of applications. We call it iChoice."
Last month, Apple announced that third-party developers would be able to write "Web 2.0-based applications" for the iPhone, ending months of speculation about whether the device would allow any iPhone access to developers not officially sanctioned by Apple.
Leka said his company was able to get its service running on the iPhone in about two hours.
Glide Mobile provides iPhone users with access to any desktop documents that they have bothered to sync online using the Glide service, including photos, music, videos, Microsoft Word documents, Outlook, Sunbird and iCal calendars, Outlook, Thunderbird and Mac address books, and bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Safari, Camino, and Firefox.
Glide Mobile includes 2 Gbytes of storage for free. An additional 10 Gbytes can be purchased, for a total of 12 Gbytes, for $49.95 annually.
