USB Developers Approve Micro-USB Connector Specification

The Micro-USB specification will support USB technology in mobile phones as well as in a new generation of ever-smaller portable devices.

A new specification for micro USB connectors has been approved by the USB Implementers Forum to replace many of the Mini-series plugs and receptacles used in portable devices.

Announced Thursday, the Micro-USB specification will support USB technology in mobile phones as well as in a new generation of ever-smaller portable devices.

The new specification will enable more portable devices to communicate with each other when a PC is not available under the umbrella of the USB On-The-Go supplement. The USB-IF said definitions under the specification include Micro-B receptacles for standard devices, Micro-AB receptacles for OTG devices, Micro-A and Micro-B plugs as well as standard cables.

"As portable devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and digital cameras get smaller and more compact, manufacturers recognized the need for a new USB connector specification to suit the design of these new products," said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF chairman and president, in a statement.
