Vivisimo has unveiled an extension to its enterprise search platform for smart phones called Vivisimo Velocity for Mobile.

Announced Tuesday, the mobile extension is aimed at enterprise workers who need access to enterprise data while they're on the road. "Even with the limited screen space and computing capacity of devices, our mobile search solution can still identify and present the right content," said Jerome Pesenti, Vivisimo chief scientist, in a statement.

The downloadable application functions in Windows Mobile and connects to the Velocity enterprise search platform. The application can also be accessed via Web browsers. Workers using the mobile feature on smart phones can receive detailed snippets, automatic topic creation, and data call-outs, Vivisimo said.

Results can be categorized by topics through precise titles of documents, files, and data pieces, while information relevancy can be weighted to match users' usual workflow. In addition, customer data and contact data can be called out, and clicked results can be displayed as cached versions.

Vivisimo said administrators already using Vivisimo Velocity can download templates for the mobile feature.

The company's current customers include Airbus, Cisco, Elli Lilly, Procter and Gamble, and USA.gov, the search engine of the U.S. government, which recently contracted Vivisimo to index a 142-page PDF file of the final report issued by the Iraq Study Group.

This story was edited on May 16 to clarify Vivisimo's capabilities.
