Cisco And Satyam To Create Health Services Network In India

Cisco also announced that it was providing an additional $100 million in its Indian innovation program, bringing its total there to $1.1 billion.

Cisco Systems and Indian-based IT services provider Satyam are launching a new venture to create an integrated health services infrastructure to connect individuals in emerging countries to emergency and other medical help.

Cisco is providing a minority investment of about $10 million toward the venture. The announcement on Tuesday in Bangalore was part of celebrations for the inauguration of Cisco development center there. Cisco also announced that it was providing an additional $100 million in its Indian innovation program. To date, the company has invested more than $1.1 billion in Indian ventures, a Cisco spokesman said.

The new collaboration with Satyam aims to provide Indians with a 911-like emergency management system, the spokesman said. There is no national emergency response system in the country -- there are only limited services in some areas, he said.

The integrated platform also would offer nonemergency health-related resources, such as helping individuals to connect with other local medical providers, he said.

The model will be repeatable for other emerging areas of the world, as well, he said.

Cisco says the program is designed to work in tandem with logistics and medical health care support provided by local government agencies or private entities to create a complete solution. The service-oriented architecture will include Cisco's network technologies such as its Unified Communications system and Unified Contact Center.
