re: 5 Worst Cloud Washers Of 2011
While the clouderati and the generally cloud-aware IT folks appreciate this whole cloud-washing debate, it's all Greek to your average cloud customer. They only reason in terms of costs, quality of service - and especially, "not run by my IT dept". We had the same true vs false debates for client-server and CRM.

And because most customers don't get the distinction, you can make the argment that cloud-washing is justified in certain cases, especially for SaaS, when it can make business sense both for customers and for vendors. Check out my blog post on the subject, called "SaaS is not necessarily cloud - should we care?" http://goo.gl/OGLdX

re: 5 Worst Cloud Washers Of 2011
Charlie, having been in the high tech business for over a decade and in the cloud education and evangilation business for the last 3 - 4 years, I can name a few companies that tried to ride the Cloud bandwagon by renaming their product with the word cloud in it. Cloud products and services have to meet the Cloud Characteristics:
Multi-tenant
Shared infrastructure
User transparency
Resource elastic providing flexible resources-on-demand
Pay-as-you-go pricing G IaaS
Meeting these criterian is the litmus test.

Charles, as I pointed out to you in my e-mail overnight, the information you used to describe why HP was cloud washing HP CloudSystem is incorrect. I took the liberty to provide your readers with the correct information on my blog at http://h30507.www3.hp.com/t5/C... so they can make up their own mind.

Our colleague Art Wittmann points out that Oracle, whenever it refers to the latest version of Solaris, calls it Gǣthe first cloud operating system.Gǥ He adds, GǣIt makes you wonder what all those other cloud offerings are using for an operating system.Gǥ
