It's nice to see a non technically oriented company valuing it's IT people. i especially like the idea of ride-alongs. sometimes getting on site to really see the issue the people are dealing with can spur great solutions.

Re: DevOps, Colocation and in the Field
@Brian.Dean: Interesting business model but flawed only at one level: Inventory management. For two bodies to process that order is easy, but what happens when the order is in bulk and involving more than one retailer? It gets really complicated to manage. That is where proper inventory management comes in and that dictates possible business opportunities.

DevOps, Colocation and in the Field
DevOps always seemed like a virtual process that is carried out through unified communication tools, etc. But, the more I think about it, there is a lot to be gained by giving up a cubicle -- instant communication and understanding. An added benefit would be an improvement in the aesthetics of the workplace.

Also, retail cooperative might be a great place for 3D printing to start in scale. For instance, there would be one website where customers would place an order to printer a product and the retail outlet that is closest to the customer would receive instruction to printer the item on their $10,000 3D printer.
