Whitepaper: Profiling Memory Subsystem Performance in an Advanced POWER Virtualization Environment

by University of Texas at El PasoJan 01, 2008

Processor virtualization facilitates the time-sharing of fixed set of hardware resources by a number of different operating system execution environments. One of its advantages is that this technology facilitates server consolidation, reducing both operating costs and power consumption. Virtualization incurs a performance penalty due to added complexity and conflicts arising from sharing fixed set of hardware resources. This research outlines and uses performance evaluation framework and methodology that uses sampled event traces to identify and understand virtualization overheads with respect to memory subsystem performance.
