Overview: The forecast for cloud computing is hot, if you believe the reviews. Analysts and industry observers have anointed cloud the next new thing, writing glowing reports on its potential.

And it’s easy to see the appeal. Cloud computing promises elasticity, on-demand access, flexibility, and pay-as-you-go capabilities. That’s an attractive alternative to the traditional computing model, in which resources dedicated to one application or project could not be easily shared or reassigned. Private clouds offer the additional benefit of allowing enterprises to avoid the security, data governance, availability and reliability concerns that arise with public clouds.

Despite the sunny outlook, potential thunderheads loom. Private cloud administrators face the challenge of managing the exceptionally complex environment: provisioning and decommissioning resources, moving workloads from one physical or virtual server to another, and providing detailed charge-back reports.

Yet, after carefully evaluating the hype and the possible drawbacks of the new computing model, many enterprise managers are concluding that cloud computing’s potential is real. They are turning to robust automation solutions to handle the server provisioning, workload management and chargeback capabilities.

Workload automation (WLA) solutions meet this need, mitigating the key private cloud challenges. Companies that implement the right automated solutions find they can harness the full power of the cloud, thereby enjoying cost savings, agility and an improved ability for IT to meet service level agreements (SLAs) as a result.
