The promise of a pay-as-you-go, scalable cloud storage solution has caught the attention of many IT managers. There is probably no area where the interest is greater than in the storage of backup data. Study after study shows that IT managers are constantly looking for ways to solve their backup headaches - and are looking to cloud storage to help relieve the pain.
Cloud backup is typically categorized into two approaches. The first is a completely external approach to the problem, where no on-premise backup storage components are used - other than possibly agent software to actually perform the backup process. While relatively simple and low-cost to implement, there can be challenges to this approach as the data set grows.
The other approach is to extend or cloud enable existing backup applications or processes.
