As enterprises collect, manage, and analyze more data, a top challenge for today's IT organizations continues to be data integration. It's also a moving target because IT is faced with increasing data volumes and new data types. Plus, there's pressure to integrate data from real-time data streams.

Organizations today are using two distinct integration architectures and design approaches, according to market research firm Gartner.

Traditional integration -- bulk and batch -- is used by more than 80% of organizations today. But more modern demands for real-time and streaming data have increased message, virtualization, and synchronization approaches to data integration, Gartner said in its Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools report, released last month.

That's because businesses are feeling the pressure to move more quickly to take advantage of short-term opportunities. They have to act fast to gain value from some of this data.

"As pressures for real-time data integration grow, organizations will need to manage a range of data latencies to make data available for use within acceptable service levels to match the required speed of business," Gartner said in its report.

Enterprises are also under increasing pressure to modernize their data integration strategies, Gartner said.

"Organizations are increasingly driven to position data integration as a strategic discipline at the heart of their information infrastructure -- to ensure it is equipped for comprehensive data capture and delivery, linked to metadata management and data governance support, and applicable diverse use cases," Gartner said in its report.

Organizations are also looking at what they need to do to as they plan for the creation of hybrid cloud deployments in their data integration strategies, according to Gartner.

With a worth approximately $2.8 billion in constant currency at the end of 2015, an increase of 10.5% from 2014, and projected growth to about $4 billion in 2020, the data integration tools market is growing faster than the rest of the enterprise software market, according to the research firm.

"Data integration capability continues to be considered of critical importance for addressing the diversity of problems and emerging requirements," Gartner said.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools in 2016 is offered on the research firm's site for a fee. However, a number of vendors featured in the report offer the report for free if you provide them with your contact details.

Following is a look at the vendors who made it into Gartner's rankings and why you should know them.
