Documentum Inc. took a step toward eliminating barriers to the reuse of content this week at the Seybold San Francisco conference when it introduced a packaged suite of publishing tools designed to let companies pull content from various repositories and publish it to multiple formats.

The key piece of the suite is the vendor's new standards-based authoring integration services, which tie Documentum's legacy content- and document-management modules with the team-collaboration, content-distribution, and digital-asset-management technologies it's acquired in the past two years. The authoring integration component lets content creators and editors work with the numerous content formats stored in Documentum repositories using native authoring tools, including popular niche publishing applications such as QuarkXPress, Dreamweaver, and Adobe's Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

The suite also consolidates the workflows embedded in Documentum's various products to create a single, automated content cycle for publishing rich media, Web-site content, unstructured documents, and other content formats to print publications, Web sites, portals, and wireless distribution channels.

Integrating all of Documentum's publishing components in this way addresses a widespread set of customer needs, says Mark Arbour, director of product management and marketing. In general, customers have asked for the ability to improve their reuse of content to lower content-related costs, improve their content quality, and generate new content-based revenue sources. Says Arbour, "We wanted to make sure we solved the key problems our customers have told us about."
