First there was software-defined networking, then DevOps, now Docker and containerization. Networking pros who haven't internalized the reality that Marc Andreessen was right aren't paying attention.

DevOps is particularly thorny because it almost begs a turf-warfare mindset. When InformationWeek asked business technology and application development pros from shops adopting DevOps which group put up the biggest fight, the top answer was that developers and data center and network ops are equally as likely to resist.

What's worse is denial. "Hey," you say. "DevOps is only for startups and the Netflixes of the world. It'll never fly in my company." Maybe you're right. But that should raise some urgent questions. What if it's not a flash in the pan? Will it work at your competitors' businesses? And if so, what does that mean for your job prospects over the long haul?

A hint on the last item is that 61% of those survey respondents said DevOps expertise is or will be on their companies' lists of must-haves for new hires in development and admin roles.

These are some of the topics I'll cover when I talk to DevOps experts Andi Mann, VP of business unit strategy at CA Technologies, and Rajat Bhargava, co-founder and CEO of JumpCloud, live on InformationWeek Radio on June 24.

Other points we'll discuss:

  • Should companies hire dedicated DevOps engineers to drive their programs, or should the DevOps ethos be baked into all operations and app dev roles?

  • What skills must IT pros have before listing DevOps on a resume?p>

  • How does the hiring calculation vary for enterprises with intransigent silos versus companies where the code is the product?

I'll interview Bhargava and Mann live Tuesday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m. PT) about these ideas and other DevOps issues. Please register here to listen live on our site, and bring your questions, which you can ask us via text chat. You also can catch the archive version.
