Google Announces a Web-based SharePoint Competitor
The BrainYard - Where collaborative minds congregate.
Google announces "Google Sites" a web-based competitor to Microsoft's SharePoint platform. From the Google press release, Google Sites is:
"an application that makes creating a team web site as easy as editing a document. With Google Sites, people can quickly gather a variety of information in one place including videos, calendars, presentations, attachments, and text and easily share it for viewing or editing with a small group, their entire organization, or the world."
For the past few years, Google has been making steady inroads into Microsoft's traditional turf of building software for knowledge workers. Google's worker productivity tools now include:
Enterprise search and desktop search
Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Talk
Google Docs (documents, spreadsheets and presentations)
and the newly created Google Sites
Comparing Google's business productivity tools to Microsoft's is not exactly an apples to apples comparison but it is still very interesting to see Google's business applications suite growing and wonder if they'll ever be able to unseat the mighty Microsoft.
