Microsoft still hasn't released any substantive sales data on Windows Phone 7, but we do have a few hints of its performance. LG has come forth saying that it has performed less than expected.Last month Microsoft said that it has moved 1,500,000 units to carriers, but that gives little indication as to how many are actually in the hands of consumers. Even if 100 percent of those have sold through, it is far below explosive numbers we've seen from iOS and Android devices.
Now Microsoft partner LG has said that its sales of Windows Phone 7 devices are below expectations. This is directly from LG according to Apple Headlines: "From an industry perspective we had a high expectation, but from a consumer point of view the visibility is less than we expected." It is still early in the life of Windows Phone 7. As has been pointed out, LG went with AT&T exclusively. That is where the iPhone is also exclusively sold in the US. It is clear that WP7 isn't a runaway hit, but to be fair, it hasn't fully launched either, at least in the US. Until CDMA phones become available, Verizon, the nation's largest network, and Sprint are both lacking a WP7 device. I'm sure as we start to get 4th quarter numbers in from various carriers, manufacturers and perhaps even Microsoft itself, we'll see real sales figures. Until then we'll have to survive on tidbits of info here and there.
