CSC Wins $56 Million Homeland Security Contract

Computer Sciences Corp. said it has been awarded a contract extension to continue providing technical support for the federal Department of Homeland Security's emergency communications networks.

The contract carries a one-year base period with a possible one-year extension, bringing the total potential value to $56 million.

Under the deal, disclosed earlier this week, CSC will provide a range of tech services to the department's National Communications System, including support for the Government Emergency Telecommunications Service (GETS) and the Wireless Priority Service (WPS) programs.

GETS and WPS are designed to give communications from first responders and other emergency personnel, as well as from government officials, priority over routine traffic on landlines and cell networks during times of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other emergencies.

CSC will provide services such as engineering and planning, implementation and integration, and operations, administration, and maintenance support for the GETS and WPS networks.

The outsourcer will "apply our broad range of engineering and management experience, as well as provide comprehensive support to improve national security and emergency preparedness telecommunications," James Sheaffer, president of CSC's North American public-sector unit, said in a statement.

Separately, CSC on Thursday said it's been selected by the U.S. General Services Administration to compete for a wide range of civil- and defense-related government contracts worth as much as $50 billion over 10 years. CSC was selected along with a number of other tech vendors under the GSA's Alliant program, with which the government plans to modernize IT infrastructures across a number of agencies and departments.

CSC and other vendors will compete for specific task orders under the program. CSC shares were up 4.6% to $39.30 in midday trading Thursday.
