Nuxeo, an open source enterprise content management vendor, has released an upgrade of its Enteprise Platform that includes an in-browser, HTML-based content annotation system for pictures and office files.

Nuxeo EP 5.2, released this week, includes more than 30 new features and marks the first upgrade since the European company announced the launch of its North American operations in February. "This is a major release of our platform," EricBarroca, chief executive of Nuxeo, said in a statement.

The annotation system in the latest version of EP leverages the World Wide Web Consortium's Annotea draft specification. Other features include compatibility with Microsoft's Windows Sharepoint Services. As a result, networked file services are implemented, so Nuxeo is seen as a Sharepoint server from Microsoft Internet Explorer and Office.

In addition the upgrade enables the publication of a workspace on the Web to create a "mini-site" from it. The mini-sites can be set up as collaboration sites. Other major features include aSQL -based storage engine for the repository. Content is stored in a "human readable" data model in the database, allowing "easy integration" at theSQL level for tools like business intelligence for reporting on content or extract, transform and load software.

Shipping within EP is Nuxeo's document management application. Key features within Nuxeo DM include management of access rights, collaboration, versioning management, classification of desktop items, metadata management, indexing and storage of external files, document classification, workflow, a multidimensional classification system and archiving.

Nuxeo EP 5.2 can be downloaded from the company's Web site. Nuxeo was named as a company to watch in 2009 by Intelligent Enterprise.
