The newest NCR 5450 Server from Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation, features a boost of 18 percent in the price/performance ratio over previous models, according to a late June announcement by the company. The new NCR 5450 Server is an integral component of Teradata Warehouse 8.1, a suite of software, hardware, and professional consulting services that drive enterprise intelligence by supporting smarter, more competitive decisions throughout the enterprise.

"Teradata has at least a two-year lead over its competitors because we are on a relentless path to improve data warehouse performance for our customers," said Randy Lea, vice president, Teradata product and services marketing. "Beyond performance, Teradata is unique; it is the only data warehouse vendor with servers that can coexist with six previous generations of servers. This investment protection of integrating the old servers with new servers outshines other vendors, including data warehouse appliances, who often have to swap out their older systems to introduce new technology into the customer's environment."

The NCR 5450 Server was designed to support the most advanced mission critical applications on which customers rely to run their business. The NCR 5450 allows businesses to incrementally grow their data warehouse by integrating, or coexisting, new NCR servers into their older system configuration, thereby maximizing their investments.

According to Lea, "Within hours of delivery to a data center, a Teradata system based on a NCR 5450 Server can be up and running, and ready to load business data. Teradata's server, storage platform and flexible database enable the optimal mix of data warehouse components, which are then configured and tested before delivery. This pre-packaging of the data warehouse components ensures that customer needs are met exactly. Data warehouse appliance vendors have started to claim this as a new capability, however, for more than 20 years Teradata has delivered systems that are 'purpose built' for enterprise data warehousing which are easy to install and manage."

The increased performance of the NCR 5450 Server improves its capability to handle increased data volumes along with heavier decision-support and complex mixed-workloads. These mixed-workloads include both deep analytics for strategic intelligence as well as the short, real-time data load and access requirements that support operational intelligence. As the business grows, the NCR 5450 Server can grow from a small powerhouse to a 4.2 petabyte-size warehouse capable of the most complex and demanding workloads for global businesses.

The NCR 5450 Server maximizes system performance and throughput required for active data warehouses by leveraging the Intel Xeon 3.8 gigahertz processor technology with Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T). The NCR 5450 Server leverages the EM64T functionality to support both 32-bit and 64-bit data warehouse solutions.

Customers may select UNIX, Windows or the 64-bit Linux operating system.
