When trying to compare the value of dissimilar systems, the best information comes from customers talking about how their applications run, not from the vendors. Doug has brought out the best customer information available to him. It's not conclusive but it is indicative. Usually journalists' attempts to do performance comparisons fall before a volley of criticism that they hasn't been done correctly. The key architectural difference is that true in-memory eliminates indexes, materialized views, caching and other redundant copies of data. Maple Leaf says that 5 terabytes stored in Oracle collapses down to 1 TB in Hana. On the other hand, DRAM is more expensive than disk, so Maple Leaf is being selective about what it puts in Hana.
