UltraBac Software released Tuesday version 8.0 of its backup and disaster recovery software, which features copying for off-site storage, barcode media pool support, differential image backup, and native 64-bit support for Intel and AMD processors.

The UltraCopy feature in v8.0 has two major benefits, according to the vendor. First, it allows duplication of tape- or disk-based backups to media for off-site removal and storage. Secondly, it enables the consolidation of multiple disk or tape backups to virtually any other removable storage medium. A user coul perform multiple disk-to-disk backups for speed, and then use UltraCopy to copy or move all of those backups to tape or other removable storage media. Built-in command line functionality also allows disk-to-disk-to-tape functionality, according to UltraBac.

Its differential image backup functionality allows end-users to perform full image backups on a periodic basis while differential image backups are performed daily. Completed differential image backups contain all modified blocks on a disk since the last full backup. This speeds the overall backup process while shortening the recovery time for end-users protecting very large partitions. Differential logic also saves time by eliminating the extra restores required by products using incremental backup logic, the vendor added.

In addition, customers with autoloaders or tape libraries can fully automate backups by creating any number of media pools using barcoded tapes. UltraBac automates tape coordination within a media pool for scheduled backup and indexes all the backup files for quick access and recovery.

Other new features of v8.0 include a centralized SQL-based database indexing option, direct backup and restore support of CD/DVD writer devices, remote autoloader support, Firewire device support, throughput throttling, and reporting of bad blocks for worn tapes.

UltraBac 8.0 is available now; pricing starts at $495 per server with the ability to backup an unlimited number of workstations.
