AT&T has resumed sales if the iPhone in New York city via their website. I tested a few zip codes in the area and both the 3G and 3GS models are available, as well as refurbished phones. For whatever reason AT&T pulled them over the weekend from the website, they have apparently reversed course. The Wall Street Journal indicated that AT&T failed to give any explanation, instead only offering a statement that merely acknowledged that the device was briefly pulled:

"A terse statement from AT&T Monday said "we periodically modify our promotion and distribution channels." An AT&T spokesman declined to comment on why the carrier temporarily stopped online sales of the iPhone."

It is anyone's guess as to what really happened, but I suspect the embarrassment of the incident prompted AT&T to quietly reverse course and release the non-explanation. I wouldn't doubt it if Verizon's marketing group was already working on the dialog and story board for another ad poking fun of the device from the Island of Misfit Toys.

It would be funny if the issue weren't so serious for iPhone and AT&T users. It seems AT&T is going to great lengths to mitigate the problem without actually beefing up the network. Of course, I know they are working on improving the network but it is slow going and the complaints continue to mount up.
