Brief: AT&T Offshoring Some Jobs
Move comes as it also brings some customer-facing support jobs back to the U.S.
AT&T last month trumpeted the fact that it would end offshore outsourcing arrangements for certain customer-service functions and bring that work to the United States. But it appears to be sending some behind-the-scenes operations out of the country at the same time. AT&T is expanding its relationship with Indian outsourcer Tech Mahindra, which is partly owned by British Telecom, say sources with knowledge of the company's plans. At least 24 software developers at AT&T's Orlando, Fla., billing center will be laid off by March and their work moved to Tech Mahindra. An AT&T spokesman confirms the Orlando cuts but says they're not part of a wider offshoring push.
