Finding Out If SharePoint Is Right For Your Organization

With a quickly growing market share and a broad set of functionality, SharePoint has become one of Microsoft's most recent success stories. For almost any organization considering an investment in an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform, SharePoint is probably somewhere on the short list. But like anything else, one size does not fit all, and SharePoint isn't a silver bullet to meet every organization's needs. So how do you find out if it will meet yours?

With a quickly growing market share and a broad set of functionality, SharePoint has become one of Microsoft's most recent success stories. For almost any organization considering an investment in an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform, SharePoint is probably somewhere on the short list. But like anything else, one size does not fit all, and SharePoint isn't a silver bullet to meet every organization's needs. So how do you find out if it will meet yours? One way is by listening to unbiased experts with a deep knowledge of the ECM marketplace. Tony Byrne, the founder of CMS Watch, is one such person, and there are a couple of upcoming opportunities to hear what Tony and others have to say about SharePoint and its place in the marketplace.

The first is a free Webinar this Thursday, Aug. 28, titled "How To Evaluate SharePoint in your Enterprise." The Webinar, co-sponsored by KMWorld, will be held at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET -- you can get additional information and sign up at webinars.kmworld.com/sharepoint/102.

The second opportunity covers more ground. Tony Byrne will be hosting a full-day SharePoint Symposium on Sept. 26 in San Jose, Calif. The event, also co-sponsored by KMWorld and CMSWatch, is intended to go into much greater detail than the Webinar on the strengths and weaknesses of SharePoint. For people already planning on attending the KMWorld & Intranets Conference in San Jose on Sept. 23-25, it might be worth adding an extra day for the SharePoint Symposium. For tickets and a full rundown of the agenda, go to Sharepointsymposium.com.

Both events look like they'll be worthwhile for teams evaluating SharePoint, and while an hour-long Webinar won't arm you with everything you need to know, it's probably a good place to start for people who can't make it to the full-day session.
