Fujitsu has unveiled the latest version of the Sparc64 processor that will power the Sun Microsystems' new midrange and high-end Unix servers.Compared to the quad-core chip's predecessor, Sparc64 VII offers an 80 percent speed boost for commercial applications and a 20 percent boost for high-computing software -- all while consuming 44 percent less energy per core, according to the companies. The processor is also made on a more advanced 65-nm process than the previous version, which used a 90-nm node.
Sun's new M4000, M5000, M8000, and M9000 enterprise servers will run on Sparc64 VII, though previous Sparc Enterprise models can be upgraded. The Register, CNET
