The board of directors of mobile device vendor palmOne appointed industry veteran Ed Colligan to be the company's president and chief executive officer.

Colligan had been acting CEO since former CEO Todd Bradley stepped down earlier this year. Colligan has been involved with the company since its early days, joining Palm Computing in 1993 as its vice president of marketing. He was one of the founders of Handspring, along with other Palm co-founders Donna Dubinsky and Jeff Hawkins and came back to palmOne when that company acquired handspring.

"Ed has been a driving force for innovation in mobile computing," palmOne board chair Eric Benhamou said in a statement. "We have conducted a comprehensive search of external candidates, and have also worked closely with Ed during his tenure as interim CEO. Ed has secured the confidence of the board, our customers, suppliers and employees, and we believe we have chosen the right leader for palmOne."
