Recosoft has released a new version of its PDF2Office PDF-to-Word conversion tool for the Macintosh. Among other improvements, the new version saves in the .docx Word 2008 format.Recosoft specializes in converting PDF files to editable Microsoft Office files, while maintaining the original document's layout, tables, images, and other formatting elements. (It also has tools for converting PDFs to Adobe InDesign and Apple iWork files.) The company released version 5 of PDF2Office Professional for the Mac last month; that product can covert PDFs to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office-compatible formats. Now they've released v.5 of their Personal version, which just handles conversion to Word.

Besides being able to save files in the Word 2008 format (the program works as a Word plugin), PDF2Office Personal is also fully compatible with Snow Leopard. The new version also remembers any font substitutions made during conversion so that the same substitutions can be used again without needing to be specified. Recosoft has also added a PDF Inspector, which shows the metadata in the PDF file -- creation date, restrictions, fonts used, and so on.

PDF2Office Personal costs $59; upgrades from previous versions are $29, and free to anyone who bought version 4 this month. The Professional version costs $129 ($89 for an education license). The InDesign converter is $299 and the iWork converter is $59. Windows versions are available, too, except for the iWork version.
