Motorola, Skyworks To Develop Digital Radios

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Motorola Inc. and Skyworks Solutions Inc. have agreed to produce complete Edge radios based on Skyworks’ Helios DigRF Radio solution.

The chipset will be designed to support next-generation mobile handsets featuring high-speed Web browsing, music downloads and streaming video.

DigRF Edge requires just 10 external components to implement a complete RF section with a digital interface. Motorola (Libertyville, Ill.) may leverage the DigRF Edge solution in the design of several of its next-generation mobile handsets."Skyworks' Helios Edge radio pushes the performance envelope and offers Motorola tremendous design flexibility, field reliability and ease of implementation," said Rob Shaddock, chief technology officer for Motorola Mobile Devices, in a statement. Our adoption of Skyworks' DigRF radio would signify our commitment to the DigRF technical specification."The DigRF Edge subsystem from Skyworks (Woburn, Mass.) occupies less than 210 mm square, minimizing the number of external components and substantially reducing the complexity, cost and power requirements of next-generation Edge platforms. The DigRF standard, which repartitions the analog to digital interface within the system layout, takes advantage of Skyworks' analog mixed-signal capabilities, as well as software strengths.
