Network Appliance Inc. said Thursday it will pay $11 million in cash for Alacritus and its Virtual Tape Library software.

Virtual Tape Library (VTL) makes disks emulate tape for high performance in large-scale backups without disrupting established tape-backup workflow and processes.

NetApp has been working closely with Alacritus since December, using VTLfor backup with its NearStore and FAS storage systems as well as with Unix and Windows servers.

The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the fourth fiscal quarter of 2005.
