In this episode of InformationWeek's Expert Voice, executive editor Curtis Franklin Jr. talks with Martha Heller, president of Heller Search Associates. Heller is an executive recruiter, a frequent speaker on IT leadership issues, and the author of several books, most recently Be the Business: CIOs in the New Era of IT.
In this wide-ranging conversation, Heller discussed the changing landscape faced by the enterprise CIO and how the successful CIO is navigating the complex new business terrain. She began with the idea that IT must support the business is old-fashioned and hopelessly out of date.
Instead, she said, IT must be woven into the very fabric of the business and treated as a part of the business -- as integral to its operations and success as accounting or human resources.
As the conversation progressed, Heller spoke about the CIO's role in the mix of jobs that make up the C-suite, and how the CIO must relate to the CEO -- a relationship not always under the CIO's control. She also tackled "shadow IT" and explained how CIOs should -- and most definitely should not -- deal with the controversial trend.
If you are a CIO, or if the CIO's office is part of your career plan, then you owe it to yourself and your organization to spend a few minutes with Martha Heller. Drop into the comment section to let us know what you thought.
