For 30 years, the Torelli Bicycle brand has been synonymous with quality imported road bikes and frames--delivered with a personal touch. But "la bicicletta che vince" (the bike that wins) was falling behind in the race to stay up-to-speed with its customers and a fast-moving market.
Owner and President Todd Linscott (left) and Product Design Manager Christian Feldhake take a break in the day to "field test" some Torelli equipment on the bike path across the street from the firm's humble North Hollywood, Calif., headquarters. The Torelli bikes are hand-tuned to perfection, but the way the front office is equipped is preventing Team Torelli from achieving top performance.
Todd sits down with SAP implementation specialist Greg Woodward, an application consultant with Navigator Business Solutions. Together they are mapping out the transformation of Torelli into an information-based business.
Knowing exactly which bikes, parts and accessories are in stock at all times, and tracking the outgoing sales and incoming shipments with pinpoint, up-to-the-minute accuracy, are among the chief goals as Torelli receives its SAP makeover.
All of Torelli's imported Italian frames are built by hand, then individually hand-aligned by Torelli's inhouse frame designer. This same alignment and attention to detail will soon be possible with Torelli's internal business operations, as well, thanks to a state-of-the-art small business information system from SAP.
InformationWeek Contributing Editor Steve Kovsky interviews Brian Hedrick of Navigator about Torelli's upcoming technology transformation.
Torelli's Director of Communications Ray Asante and National Sales Manager Crystal Talbot ponder the possibilities of a sweeping information systems makeover that could allow the company to break into a brand new level of back-end business efficiency.
