Citing the need for greater performance in data transmission, Synology has rolled out the DiskStation DS1511+, the successor to its DS1010+ network attached storage (NAS) server.
The DS1511+ provides greater scalability and storage capacity for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) at a time when "the performance of data transmission becomes a predominant requirement for setting up a centralized file server in a business environment," said the NAS product maker in a statement. "With link aggregation, the DS1511+ surpasses its predecessor to deliver an astonishing 197 MB/sec in reading speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 165 MB/sec in writing," said Chad Chiang, Synology product manager. High data availability is achieved with the 2 LAN structure with failover support plus hot swappable drives, the company said.
The DS1511+ has space for five hard drives and a single drive can reach a 3 TB capacity. When two Synology DX510 expansion units are connected, the NAS can scale up to a total of 15 drives for a maximum of 45 TB, the company said. Additionally, the DS1511+ consumes only 68 watts of power during operation when running on a 1.8-GHz dual-core processor. Energy savings and reduced operating cost are achieved with the multiple scheduled on/off, wake on LAN/WAN, and drive hibernation features.
The DS1511+ has a Synology DiskStation Manager 3.0 operating system, and customized privilege setup on files and folders with Windows access control list (ACL) support on the existing Windows user interface, according to Synology. Software management tools also included with the NAS server are Storage Manager, Synology Hybrid RAID, and Surveillance Station 5, which lets the NAS act as a network video recorder.
Other features for resource sharing include network protocol support across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms and an encrypted FTP server and Web-based file browser for file access. Security is provided through the presence of HTTPS, firewall, IP auto-block, and an AES 256-bit encryption engine, the company said.
The Synology DS1511+ comes with a three-year limited warranty and retails for about $900.
