Dell Preps Tablet For Summer Release
Dell on Tuesday announced it will launch "Streak," an Android-based mobile Internet device aimed at providing on-the-go mobile entertainment, social networking and navigation features.
Similar in size to an iPhone, the Streak tablet will launch in the U.K. in early June and the U.S. later this summer, but the PC maker did not provide specific launch dates for either country.
The Streak, Dell said, shows that the type of device users employ to access their virtualized desktops is irrelevant, as mobile devices can now offer the same computing experience as desktops and notebooks.
Dell introduced the Streak in January during the Consumer Electronics Show, where tablet PCs received a wave of attention; since then, it has made periodic leaks about specs for the device on gadget blogs.
The Streak will have a 5-inch WVGA touchscreen, Qualcomm's 1-GHz Snapdragon Processor, 2 GB internal storage, maximum 32GB of external SD storage, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a front-facing camera for video chat. The Streak will also have 3G, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity.
When it launches, the Streak run on Android 1.6 (Donut), but the device will receive an over-the-air upgrade to the new Flash-capable Android 2.2 (Froyo) later this year, according to a Dell spokesperson. The mini tablet will also come pre-loaded with Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube apps, and Google Maps featuring free turn-by-turn navigation.
"The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smartphones and larger-screen tablets," said Ron Garriques, president, Dell Communication Solutions Group, in a statement. "Its unique size provides people new ways to enjoy, connect, and navigate their lives."
Dell promises video chat applications and other software innovations to be available down the road, for example, taking advantage of the Dell Streak's front facing VGA Web camera.
The Streak will be available next month in Europe through Telefonica subsidiary O2, and AT&T will begin selling it later this summer, Dell said. The company has not announced pricing or U.S. carrier details.
