Re: Elance / oDesk / Upwork
I used to be on Elance a while back. It was a golden time, before real low bidders came into it, along with the people who love to pay well below what work is worth, and they ruined it. It's to go know that other platforms out there exist for higher quality work ... though it sounds like the low bidders are still around.

Re: Elance / oDesk / Upwork
I would say its definitely worth checking out. The higher end work does seem to be migrating over there gradually. Just be prepared for a lot of lowest bidder kind of jobs being posted. Takes a bit of patience to get going at first.

Re: Elance / oDesk / Upwork
@Somedude8 It seems that I've been living a cave for a while. I didn't know about oDesk/Elance, and I just found out Upwork thanks to this article.
So, is it worth to check it out and become a freelancer there, right? I don't see much to lose really.

Re: Health Insurance
@broadway. I think Obamaare is really great. I was a college student the insurance I got from Obamacare was much better than the school.  As very one pointed out, doing freelancing is good; but not as good if you can't get insurance.  If anybody here would like to share their stories on how they started doing freelancing, that will be good for other individuals whom would like to do freelance.

Re: Health Insurance
Wow, Terry. Great story. I assume you're satisfied with Obamacare then? I was just having this discussion with my wife this morning about what will happen when more and more people get on Obamacare? Will there still be such a push to repeal it? My answer was no. Besides the consumers. Insurance companies and hospitals love it too.

Re: Health Insurance
@Broadway0474, I'm interested in Gary's experience also but I can tell you, in Wisconsin, the Gold level package with best benefits/lowest deductable is way cheaper than that $800 a month policy I had. My policy was equivalent in benefits to that Bronze/low level policy under the new ACA. I sure wish it existed back then.

Re: Health Insurance
Gary, I'm interested to hear more about your experience with Obamacare. Your premium didn't go up? You didn't get frozen out of the website when you tried to buy it?

Health Insurance
The biggest boost to freelancing - Obamacare.  It used to be that as a member of a group of one, I got repeatedly robbed by the insurance companies. Now, thanks to President Obama, I'm in a group of several tens of millions, plus there is BIG Government oversight. Thank you, Mr. President.

Elance / oDesk / Upwork
The freelance programming market has undergone a weird change for many, one that should stabilize at some point. The top two freelance sites for finding work were Elance and eDesk. Yes there were and are others, but those two seemed to have much much more work than all the rest combined. Elance had a mix of clients, some looking for lowest bidder, others looking for top quality work. oDesk was just lowest bidder clients and contractors, and was frankly, a cesspool with lots of bad things happening. Then oDesk somehow bought Elance. The two existed as totally separate entities for a while, and all was still good.

Then oDesk/Elance decided to shut down Elance and rebrand the combined entity as Upwork. The resulting entity was nothing more than a redesigned oDesk. They basically threw away their high end brand.

The situation at Upwork does seem to be improving, but slowly. It seems like there is starting to be more high end work. Initially, it was just oDesk work, and it was awful. I am fortunate to already have a good enough client base to ride out this weirdness for a while. Just hope the high end work starts showing up more at Upwork sooner rather than later.
